Urban Outfitters Goes Nomad in Knoxville, TN: October 22 - 25, 2011

I received this email from the Urban Outfitters Publicity team, and thought I'd share this interesting concept with Nashville Fashion Blog readers. Even though we have our own UO and the team is heading to Knoxville, TN, the pop-up trailer is a pretty cool idea. Here are the details:

Urban Outfitters Goes Nomad!

We've hit the road and we're taking our nomadic store where no Urban Outfitters has been before. Constructed from two 20' x 8' shipping containers, our new Store on Tour is a fully functioning mobile mini-store that will visit four cities over the next four weeks.

This project was envisioned as a way to deliver the Urban Outfitters experience in cities where we have yet to open a full-fledged Urban Outfitters store. Throughout October our Store on Tour will be traveling over 928 miles across the Southeast United States, with stops in Columbia, SC, Athens, GA, Tallahassee, FL and Knoxville, TN.

The physical structure of the Urban Outfitters Store on Tour is a well-traveled, rusty shipping container stripped down, transformed and given a new life.

"The basic concept for the Store on Tour container was to leverage the intrinsic qualities of a used shipping container—which is designed and engineered to travel—as a protective outer shell, unfolding to reveal a fully re-imagined, yet still utilitarian Urban Outfitters store," says Senior Manager of Store Design, Jeremiah Bailey. "The fabrication details build on this utility, with shelving and fixtures designed to fold up and pack back inside the container for travel. Using as many repurposed and salvaged materials as possible, the store also features reclaimed fluorescent bulbs crafted into a chandelier, while hooks and buckles from the shipping containers serve to mount shelving."

The nomadic store is stocked with a little bit of everything shoppers would typically find in an Urban Outfitters store including women's and men's apparel, graphic tees, accessories, electronics and home items. New mobile point-of-sale technology will replace traditional cash registers, allowing our staff to complete sales transactions on the fly throughout the store.

For our first Fall 2011 tour, we've partnered with Dockers® to create a mobile art gallery. South Carolina-based artist Hollis Brown Thornton headlines the exhibition along with four up-and-coming artists from the Southeast. Dockers® called upon these artists to reinterpret khaki in their own way using raw Dockers® 'Alpha' Khaki material. The Dockers®-developed and Urban Outfitters-curated gallery will showcase each artist's creation.

In addition to Dockers®, DRY Soda, an all-natural, less sweet, four ingredient soda, and Tortoise & Blonde, a family owned eyewear company are joining the Urban Outfitters Store on Tour caravan. DRY Soda will be driving the DRY sampling truck nearly 2000 miles across the country to sample and sell bottles of their all-natural soda in each city, and Tortoise & Blonde is bringing along their collection of glasses for shoppers to try and purchase.
