Adventures in Swapping

Clothes swapping, duh! Last night I attended my first Clothes Swap at a friend of friend’s house in East Nashville. Now, if you’ve never heard of or been to one of these amazing events, get on the sustainability / free clothes train! Here’s the gist.. You know those clothes, shoes, and accessories you never wear anymore and are planning to take to Goodwill anyways? Well, stuff those into a bag (or several as some of the ladies had last night) and grab your favorite bottle of wine and some delicious snacky treats. Take all the materials to a friend’s house where everyone else has done the same. Next, lay out the clothes in a semi-strategic manner and start eyeing what you want from your friends’ piles. Our hosts thought it best to have the 17 guests draw numbers for equal clothing swapping opportunities. Also, that way, one person doesn’t swoop in and grab all the “good” stuff. Once your number is reached, you’re allowed to choose a few (we said 2) items to put in your bag. After everybody has had a pass, it’s a free for all!! Items that are not chosen are donated to charity.

This is quite possibly the greatest idea ever and a fantastic way to both purge your closet of gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories and still rack up on some new finds. One girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure.

The event last night was a blast and I met a lot of new and fabulous ladies. And while I had recently donated clothes to Goodwill and had a minimal amount to bring, some swappers brought bags and bags and boxes and boxes of items! There must have been over 1,000 items there. Seriously.

Items I brought (L to R): BNWT Cheap Monday skinny jeans, BNWT Franco Sarto sunglasses, Green Gap coat, Diesel zip-up, adorable tank top, Merona lace top, BNWT H&M shirt, ridiculously adorable Marc Jacobs sweater (it was hard letting go of that one and it was the second item snatched up!).

My lovely friends Katie & Allison unpacking their swap clothes.

The entire house looked like this... piles and piles of clothes..

I’m also suuuuuper picky about what I wear, but got some great finds including skirts, dresses, tops, a scarf, pair of shoes, and my Halloween costume!

Part of my finds: Vintage gray skirt, Banana Republic wrap dress (great for work), leopard scarf, ridiculous feather tee I can't wait to rock on Thanksgiving.

This is truly my gem of the night. Why did nobody else snatch this up?? Oh, wait.. maybe because it’s a shirt adorning a giant swan and feathers… But how uhh-mazing will this be for Halloween? I just need to make a feather skirt to match, and I’ll be soo Bjork (see below).

The clothes swap was fun because it was both impromptu and decidely DIY. Here are a few pictures from the evening. (I forgot to bring my big fancy camera, so these were taken with my shotty little Cannon.)

Not the best picture in the world, but we're getting geared up to choose numbers.

We tore into this.

These lasted a goooood twenty minutes.

After the swap ended and we had filled our bags, the night continued on with newly made friends and fabulous discussions about clothes, music, thrift shopping, work, school, and yeah, maybe there was a little boy talk in there, too.

So, you need to organize one of these events asap. Free clothes, booze, food, friends, and charity. What more could you ask for on a Wednesday night?

Model Behavior Party and Fashion Show: March 4, 2011

Mark your calendars for this year’s Model Behavior party and fashion show sponsored by NFocus Magazine. This event will take place Friday, March 4, 2011 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM at the W.O. Smith School.

According to the description on NFocus Magazine’s website, “The Model Behavior 2011 "Shimmer and Shine" fashion show will feature one-of-a-kind jewels and fabulous shoes from a select group of local boutiques. Model Behavior honors ten female representatives from Gilda's Club, Cumberland Heights, Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Oasis Center, Harpeth River Watershed Association, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Saint Thomas Foundation, The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere and The Belcourt Theatre.”General admission tickets are $40 and VIP front row seating, which includes a goody bag, are $100.

The darling Holly Hoffman (think nD Festival) will be representing the Belcourt Theatre for this year’s Model Behavior Party. According to an email I got from Holly, when you purchase your ticket there is a pull-down menu where you select the Honoree. Holly asks you click on the Belcourt Theatre because “the nonprofit with the most tickets sold receives a cash prize from NFocus.” Sounds like fun and a great cause!

Sneak Peek: Marchesa F/W 2011 RTW Collection

With Fashion Week designers all a buzz, I thought I’d go ahead and jump on the bandwagon to comment. Since this is Nashville Fashion Blog, of course I have to make this relate to our fare music city somehow! So, I wanted to give you all a sneak peek of the Marchesa F/W 2011 RTW Collection. (For those who have no clue what I just said, let me break it down: F/W = Fall / Winter; RTW = Ready to Wear.)
I anticipate on seeing some of these looks on the runway at the upcoming Spring Symphony fashion show with guest performer Faith Hill on April 26, 2011. Enjoy!

Nashville’s Newest Style Icon? YOU! Launch of StyleBy.Me- Nashville.

StyleBy.Me is Nashville’s newest street style destination where users can showcase their own personal style and find inspiration for future ensembles. As detailed on the company’s user profile, “StyleBy.Me is just that; your style, by you, for you, displayed for your city to see.” StyleBy.Me is a lot like Lookbook.nu. However, unlike Lookbook.nu, which allows users from any city/country to submit self-styled photos, StyleBy.Me is city specific. The company first launched its local lookbook for users of Northwest Arkansas and recently expanded to the Nashville market.
The small company consists of 5 team members; two co-founders, a business development director, a director of photography, and two interns. Co-founder Josh Clemence says “StyleBy.Me… gives the opportunity to aggregate styles down to a local science. Instead of seeing a new style in a magazine or on TV, or posed by a model, you now have a tool that allows you to keep up with local styles and trends.” Speaking specifically to the users of Northwest Arkansas, co-founder Anna Chatelain says, “… I can hardly wait to unveil the inspiring looks that are sure to come to NWA! To date, I have already been in awe of the originality produced from the region.” (Fun fact: Ever wonder what the C in Amber C. stands for? Now you know… Anna is the most recent addition to the Chatelain family. Love it!)

So, how does StyleBy.Me work? According to the company website, interested parties upload photos of their style, can browse through other looks, and have viewers ‘like’ their style. Users submit styles by filling out the ‘Submit Your Style’ form, answering questions like who you are wearing and giving yourself a style title. Now, this isn’t a free for all- there are rules to this! Read more about submission rules here and click here to submit your style.
Be sure to bookmark StyleBy.Me and upload looks of your most fabulous street fashion! Here is a sample of current looks from Nashville as posted on StyleBy.Me's website:
