Friday Five: Halloween Spirit

Five things, Nashville and beyond, that I'm currently trending...

With the weekend of Halloween upon us, what's more appropriate than a list of five of my favorite spooky themed highlights?

1. Halloween Dinner Parties
If you're an avid reader of Nashville Fashion Blog, you'll know that I'm ALL about the dinner party. I love the sophistication of an elegantly placed dish, the pop of food on a white plate, and delicious hand-shaken cocktails to top off an evening. Themed dinner parties add a bit of flair to the occasion and correlate perfectly with the holiday season. Here are some of my favorite Halloween dinner party pictures and ideas:

2. Pumpkin Carving
On tonight's to-do list, I'm all about engaging in the Halloween festivities with a little pumpkin carving. I prefer the classic and basic triangle eyes, nose, and toothed mouth, but fanatics can get wild with their carving skills.

3. Epic Costumes
One of my favorite things about Halloween is posting up in one of my local watering holes and people watching for excellent costumes. I'm not talking Sexy Finding Nemo (yes, it's a real costume) or Slutty Nurse, but those magnificent ensembles that truly represent Halloween costuming at its finest.

4. Haunted Houses
I have a love/hate relationship with haunted houses. Last year a friend and I attended a local haunted house (Death Valley, maybe?), wherein I spent a good $10 of my entry fee either with my eyes closed or attempting to climb up my friend in terror. The scary makeup, chainsawed men who chase you, loud pops of noise, and the quick leap of a ghoul for a terrifying scream... I love that it scares the hell out of me.

Nashville has some great haunted houses and haunted woods attractions. I recently gathered a group of friends to test my limits at Scream Creek. It was an epic haunted woods win.

5. Halloween Movies
Confession. I've been watching nothing but AMC's Fear Fest for the past month. Seriously. I'm absolutely totally obsessed with scary movies. It's irony at its finest, because I get terrified, scream, and latch on to the person closest to me during about 90% of the films, but I love it! There's nothing better than an evening on the couch, curled up in a blanket, munching on some gourmet popcorn, and scaring the hell out of yourself. Although I'll watch just about anything, I'm partial to the classic and timeless flicks. Here are a few of my favorite scary movies:

The Exorcist.
Not only is this 1973 classic film my favorite scary movie of all time, it's also one of my favorite movies ever. Halloween or not, this film is a must.

Night of the Living Dead.
By today's standards, this 1968 black and white film is seriously tame. But it's important to remember that this classic was a catalyst for the entire zombie movie genre.

Halloween.
The 1978 film is a classic icon of the spooky season and the first to ever showcase events through the killer's eyes.

The Shining.
Filmed in 1980, this classic horror film is terrifying, suspenseful, and so weird. And nothing is creepier than those little twin girls!

What are some of your favorite horror movies?

Flavour Groupon: $50 for $100 Worth of Merchandise

Groupon's deal of the day features Flavour Boutique. For $50 you can get $100 worth of goods at this local retailer. Here's the deal:

A jellyfish's handshake is simultaneously weak and poisonous, which is why it seldom makes good first impressions. Avoid the jellyfish effect by donning new duds with today's Groupon: for $50, you get $100 worth of apparel and accessories at Flavour.
The chic staff at Flavour stocks racks with high-quality apparel for men and women from designers such as True Religion, Kat Von D, Splendid, and Robert Graham. Fashionistas can slip into a Lone Ranger tee ($36) to intimidate potential cattle rustlers or a Chan Luu cashmere scarf ($190) to intimidate chilly gusts of wind. The Splendid cowl neck sweater ($88) wraps torsos in trendy warmth, and the Seduce micro-suede dress ($172) hugs curves as gently as a pair of tin-foil overalls. Men can maintain casual charm with Retro Brand T-shirts ($42) displaying classic rock bands, or they can gussy up with a Robert Graham button-down shirt ($248). J Fold wallets (from $38) fit perfectly into the pockets of True Religion jeans ($319), creating a fusion of functionality and style rivaled only by sequined orthopedic shoes.

Friday Five: Fashion Illustration Update

Five things, Nashville and beyond, that I'm currently trending..

In preparation for an upcoming course, I've been doing some research on various fashion illustrators. I've come across some talented artists, designers, and illustrators, I thought I'd share.

An apparel designer at Reebok, this talented artist practices fashion illustration as a much-loved hobby. Her creations are unique, trendy, and in high-demand. The illustrator has been commissioned by giants like Target and Coach. You can find out more about Kathryn and see her creations via her blog, PaperFashion.

illustration of a tsumori chisato fall 2011 look.

Nashville-based designer Amy Breen of amy b. clothing is not only a talented clothing designer, but also an incredible artist. Her loosely drawn sketches are fashion-forward and inspiring. Her illustrations represent a culmination of my favorite drawing techniques- fast lines, imperfection, and pen with watercolor. Amy has lent her talents to my Fashion Drawing class, serving as a guest lecturer, been commissioned by myself for customized art, and her illustrations have been displayed at the local restaurant Jacksons.
Sketches for her upcoming collection.

My favorite amy b. sketch. I'm obsessed with the monochromatic hues and splattered paint.

Born in Heinkenszand, the Netherlands in 1981, this artist began freelancing after graduation. Her favorite mediums are pen and pencil, colored pencil, and graphite. While her favorite muses are friends and family, she does get inspired by models and fashion designers as well. Denise's impressive client list includes Elle, and she has been published in eight fashion illustration books.

Dutch artist Judith van den Hoek's illustrations are minimalistic, yet alluring. Simple and timeless. I appreciate the little use of color, and strong facial constructions.

Utilizing a mixed medium of pencil and texture, fashion illustrator Niki Pilkington studied fashion promotion and fashion illustration at Ravensbourne Academy of Design & Communication. The talented artist has had several solo exhibitions and boasts an impressive client list including the likes of Topshop, Nylon Mag, Elle, Laurence King Publishing, and Paul McCartney.
